1940-05-14 Mr. Anthony Eden broadcast an appeal for Local Defence Volunteers

Mr. Anthony Eden broadcast an appeal for Local Defence Volunteers. After two weeks 40,000 volunteers had answered the appeal and at the end of two months, 1,060,000 had volunteered.
L.D.V. renamed the Home Guard in August 1940.

By October 1940 the Home Guard numbered over one and a half million men.
