Louis Mountbatten's Chief of Staff, Major General Albert Wedemeyer, was ordered by General George Marshall to proceed to China to take over command of US forces in China and to replace Joseph Stilwell as Chiang Kai-Shek's Chief of Staff. On arrival he was dismayed to discover that Stilwell had intentionally departed without seeing him and without leaving any briefing papers for his guidance
