AACHEN
130 aircraft dispatched with the headquarters building of the local Nazi party as their aiming point. This would have the same result as a general area attack on the centre of the town. 1 Halifax and 1 Hampden lost.
Only 64 aircraft claimed to have bombed Aachen, in difficult weather conditions. The Aachen report (incorrectly dated

) describes an attack by an estimated 16 aircraft, some of which flew as low as 400 metres to find the town. Only 5 high explosives - 2 of them duds - 9 incendiaries and a few leaflets - fell on Aachen itself. The Aachen-West railway goods yards were hit by 3 bombs, and 7 houses were slightly damaged by other bombs. There were no casualties. Many bombs fell in open ground north of Aachen.
BREST
23 Wellingtons and 7 Stirlings; only 3 aircraft bombed the approximate location of the warship targets. Stirlings of 7 and 15 Squadrons carried out the first operational trials of the Oboe device on this raid. Further trials would be carried out in other raids on Brest in December. (The characteristics of Oboe are described later.) There were no aircraft losses on this raid.
Minor Operations: 24 Wellingtons to Calais, 23 Blenheims to Ostend, 17 Whitleys and 5 Wellingtons to Dunkirk, 19 Wellingtons, Hampdens and Manchesters to Boulogne, 3 O.T.U. sorties. Losses: 1 Blenheim on the Ostend raid, 1 Manchester on the Boulogne raid, 1 Wellington on the Dunkirk raid.
Total effort for the night: 251 sorties, 5 aircraft (2.0 percent) lost.
