GERMANY
57 Hampdens, Wellingtons and Whitleys to 9 targets; 1 Hampden lost. 3 O.T.U. sorties.
One of the targets raided on this night was Hamburg, whose local historian, Hans Brunswig, notes that the first R.A.F. 250-lb petrol bombs were recorded at approximately this time. They were described as being packed with petrol-soaked rags - 'Churchill's old socks' suggest the Hamburg humorists.
