On the same day, 13 Ki-84 fighters of Japanese 22nd Sentai and 16 Ki-43 fighters of Japanese 25th Sentai intercepted a formation of B-24 bombers escorted by P-40 and P-51 fighters of the US 14th Air Force near Yueyang, Hunan, China; 5 American fighters and 2 Japanese fighters were shot down in the engagement.
