Nachi departed Ominato Guard District, Mutsu, Aomori Prefecture, Japan. After dark, about 50 miles northeast of Ominato, she was detected by US submarine USS Halibut (which mis-identified Nachi as a destroyer) and was struck by one of Halibut's spread of four torpedoes; the torpedo failed to detonate Tabular Record of Movement
