The 83 Sqdn left from Wyton at 1943-01-01 at 17:55
On Friday 01 January 1943, a member of the 83 Sqdn, Sergeant B E Hargrove, took off from Wyton in the United Kingdom. His mission is mentioned elsewhere on WW2 History Europe. You can find the other details of this mission by searching here. Training and cargo flights are not separately mentioned as a mission. The plane left at 17:55.

He flew with a Avro Lancaster (type I, serial W4799, code OL-S).

Campaign report of the USAAF:

2 January 1943 (Eighth Air Force): Four radar-equipped B-24s of the 329th Bombardment Squadron (Heavy), 93d Bombardment Group (Heavy) fly a "moling" or intruder, mission aimed at harassing the enemy in weather unsuitable for large missions by alerting air-raid crews in the area north of the Ruhr. The 329th has been in training for these operations since 14 Dec. This mission and two subsequent missions in Janauary are foiled by clear weather over the target area. Twenty Spitfire Mk Vs of the 4th Fighter Group are dispatched on fighter patrols. HQ 2d Antisubmarine Squadron (Heavy) with B-24s is established at St. Eval, England upon arrival from the U.S.

Campaign report of the RAF:

31 December 1942

6 Mosquitos attacked various targets in Belgium and France without loss.

31 December 1942/1 January 1943

Oboe Trials

8 Lancasters and 2 Oboe Mosquitos of the Pathfinder Force to Düsseldorf. 1 Lancaster lost.

This was a trial raid, with the Mosquitos dropping target markers by Oboe for the small Lancaster force. Only 1 Mosquito was able to use Oboe. The Düsseldorf report shows that, out of 9 recorded bombing incidents, 6 were at industrial premises, though no serious damage was caused. 10 civilians and 2 Flak soldiers were killed, 34 people were injured and 7 more were classified as missing. Later in the night, 3 more Oboe Mosquitos were sent to attack the German night-fighter control room at Florennes airfield in Belgium. 2 Mosquitos operated their Oboe equipment satisfactorily and dropped 6 high-explosive bombs from 28,000ft through 10/10ths cloud. The results are not known. No aircraft lost.

Minor Operations: 29 aircraft minelaying off Biscay ports, 8 OTU sorties. 1 Wellington minelayer lost.
