On Thursday, 24 July 1941, (a part of) the aircraft of the 142 squadron (RAF), took off for a mission to Bremerhaven in Germany from a station (airfield) in or near an unknown station.
One of the crew members was Sergeant R S Wallwork. He departed for his mission at an unknown time.
He flew with a Vickers Wellington (type II, with serial W5494 and code ED X. His mission and of the other crew members was planned for Thursday, 24 July 1941.

It was believed to have carried the ID letters ED X the aircraft belonged to 21OTU but the crew were from 1446Flt, RAF Moreton-in-Marsh, it crashed approx 1 mile East of Bethesda during a cross country navex at approx 1130 on 22/12/1942 with the loss of all crew.
Crew:
During a previous Op flown on 24 July 1941 by a 142 Sqn crew W5494 bombed the Scharnhorst and Gniesenau in Brest. W5494 was attacked by two Bf109s, rear gunner Sgt Wallwork shot one down but was fatally wounded by the second fighter.
