The 139 Sqdn left from Wyton at 1943-11-25 at 19:10. Loc or duty Berlin
On Thursday 25 November 1943, a member of the 139 Sqdn, Flight Lieutenant A R Head, took off from Wyton in the United Kingdom. His mission is mentioned elsewhere on WW2 History Europe. Campaign report of the USAAF:


(AEAF): Air Chief Marshall Sir Trafford L Leigh-Mallory activates HQ Allied Expeditionary Air Force (AEAF).

The RAF's Second Tactical Air Force, and-on 15 Dec-the US Ninth Air Force (operationally) are included under AEAF.

STRATEGIC OPERATIONS

(Eighth Air Force): In France, bombing by P-47's is inaugurated by the VIII Fighter Command in an attack on Saint-Omer airfield by the 56th and 353d Fighter Groups; two other fighter groups, the 55th (P-38's) and 352d (P-47's), carry out offensive sweeps in the Lille area; the fighters, including 2 escorting groups, fly over 330 offensive sorties.

The 401st Bombardment Group (Heavy) reaches operational status, making 22 heavy bomber groups now operational in the Eighth Air Force. The 712th and 713th Bombardment Squadrons (Heavy), 448th Bombardment Group (Heavy), arrive at Seething, England from the US with B-24's. They will fly their first mission on 22 Dec.



Campaign report of the RAF:


24/25 November 1943

6 Mosquitos bombed Berlin through cloud and 9 OTU Wellingtons took leaflets to France. 1 Mosquito lost.

25/26 November 1943

262 aircraft - 236 Halifaxes and 26 Lancasters - of Nos 4, 6 and 8 Groups to Frankfurt. As on the previous night, there were no major diversions and the bomber force took a relatively direct route to the target. The German controller did not know whether Mannheim or Frankfurt was the real objective but he eventually chose Frankfurt, where the flak was restricted to 15,000 ft. 12 bombers - 11 Halifaxes and 1 Lancaster - lost, 4.6 per cent of the force.

3 Mosquitos to Berlin, 48 aircraft minelaying off Brest and Texel and in the Frisians, 28 OTU sorties. 1 Stirling minelayer lost.
