COMMUNICATIONS, TROOP POSITIONS
103 aircraft - 38 Wellingtons, 36 Whitleys, 29 Hampdens - to targets over a wide area. The Wellingtons attempted to bomb troop locations close to the battlefield in France and Belgium; the Whitleys and Hampdens mostly attacked communications further in the rear. 2 Hampdens and 1 Wellington lost.
A report from Cologne describes how a Whitley, despite thick cloud, accurately bombed the Sdbrcke and how the gas main under the bridge was set alight. The wooden planking of the railway bridge started burning and the bridge was closed to traffic for at least 1_ hours. This would be a typical incident during these attempts to cut communications between Germany and the battle front.
