DÜSSELDORF
44 aircraft - 25 Whitleys, 12 Hampdens, 7 Halifaxes; only the estimated position of the target was bombed, through cloud. 2 Whitleys and 1 Halifax lost.
6 Hampdens were dispatched to the Wesel area for searchlight suppression operations in the German searchlight belt. These aircraft attacked any searchlight which was holding another bomber in its beam. The Hampdens dived to attack with small bombs and with machine guns; this usually caused the searchlight to lose the bomber which it had been holding. The Hampdens operating on this night found that, after 25 minutes of this type of attack, all the searchlights in the area became erratic and some were extinguished.
